Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 January 2020 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase It was ok. It started well but then I had to skim read a lot in the middle when there seemed to be a lot of detail but not much movement. It also got confusing at times, trying to keep up with so many aliases. I seemed to get more into it for the last 25% but it didn't leave me wanting to see the film or wanting to read more in the series. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 January 2020 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Overall a good read, only spoiled by what to me, was an over long and leaden first half. As well as the slow pace, I found my credulity fully stretched by the development of the main character from a young nihilistic prostitute, to a fully developed alpha assassin employed by a shady off the board government department. The good news is that the second half of the book is worth the effort of perseverance. The story develops at a cracking pace and by the end I was not wanting the tale to end. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 April 2019 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Read this because I understand it is due to be made into a movie. It does have a very 'cinematic' feel to it and I think it will translate well to the big screen. The writing style is 'functional' but do you keep turning the pages. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 June 2018 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Saw this book script being filmed in Cadiz last week, so thought I would read it before the film came out, starring Jude law and Blake Lively. My god, I have rarely been so gripped by a book! Well written, great plot, total absorbing and, in this era, not at all unbelievable. Riveting book! Would highly recommend. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 March 2020 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Good plot line but far too wordy and found myself skipping whole chunks of unnecessary detail (it reads like a London A to Z in places). Admirable background research by the author but could have left out a lot of it to keep the pace going. Also a couple of unanswered questions about the financial plight she has found herself in. Wouldn't she have received a huge amount of compensation from the airline? Wouldn't her parents have had some form of insurance? A bit more plot development there would have made her descent into prostitution more believable. Overall it probably makes a better film than it does a book. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 February 2020 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase A well paced thriller that should make for an exciting film. Although I enjoyed the novel, something about Stephanie Patrick is a pornographic vision of who a woman is rather than a real woman. Also Malta's significance for Islamic history does not appear to have been understood by the author. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 September 2017 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Loved this book, the research that must have gone into it is phenomenal. Its amazing that this book was published two years before 9/11 as it discusses things that I was only aware of after that event. Looking forward to the film which is being produced and will be reading the sequels too. Fantastic read would totally recommend Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 January 2020 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Easy read and no surprise to find it Ben made into a film and has sequels Sadly the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the gold standard and this is the bronze Top international reviews 5. 0 out of 5 stars I am hooked! Reviewed in Canada on 6 February 2020 Verified Purchase Excellent read. Much more satisfying than the movie. I did enjoy the movie but like all movies it left questions. Not sure if I am supposed to but I like Stephany. She has chosen a very hard life or maybe it chose her. Glad I found the book and I will recommend it to friends. Sending feedback... Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again Report abuse Excellent read Reviewed in Canada on 10 January 2020 Verified Purchase I was surprised how good this book is. Fast paced and a quick read. If you do pick it up you may be surprised when it was originally published given the subject matter. 3. 0 out of 5 stars Somewhat like Humble Pie with a progressive twist-- 3. 5 stars Reviewed in the United States on 30 April 2006 Verified Purchase I remember this l. p. from 1974 on underground fm radio. In those days my friends and I thought they sounded a bit like Humble Pie, with a dash of Trapeze and early Uriah Heep. There is real talent here although the sound is somewhat dated featuring heavy guitars combined with mellotrons, piercing vocals, and mystical lyrics. On the other hand, it was, after all, released in 1974 and it is really pretty good. For fans of early seventies hard rock with a slightly progressive twist this album will have definite appeal; but the reason I bought it on c. d. was mostly of nostalgic curiousity. Interestingly, the original l. was on Mach Records distributed by London, and the l. was recorded in Memphis for Hi Recording Corp! Yes, that's Al Green and Willie Mitchell's ground zero. As a Memphian, I wish I knew a little more about Leviathan. At that particular time in the city we were really into the Who, Big Star, the Stones, and Bowie (all still favorites). Stax and Hi were still churning out soul classics but business problems would soon overtake them. The music of progressive type bands like Leviathan was becoming passe' very quickly, but the perspective of thirty two years might have made me unduly critical; this c. is better than I expected it to be. It is well worth picking up. Three Stars Reviewed in Australia on 6 June 2018 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Not sure I will read follow up books. A tad over the top. 4. 0 out of 5 stars Kindle edition warning Reviewed in the United States on 18 October 2018 Verified Purchase Unfortunately the publisher chose not to indent paragraphs but to use leading to separate them Therefore, the kindle edition has no indentions or leading to provide visual cues to changing viewpoints or speakers. By the third or fourth chapters I became attuned to the problem but publishers need to be MORE aware of the implications of format decisions of print books for electronic versions. It would be easy to embed e-version coding that would not affect the print version. I have seen this problem in other books where leading is used rather than ellipses between chapter scenes. I think this is the first time I have tried to read a book where every line is flush left. 26 people found this helpful Fascinating! Reviewed in the United States on 28 December 2019 Verified Purchase I read that book after seeing the trailer for the movie version coming out soon. It was not at all what I expected from the trailer. The story took off in a completely different direction and continued to take turns I didn't see coming! I'm looking forward to seeing the film, and to reading the next novel in this series 6 people found this helpful Written a few years before 9/ time is often not referenced. Reviewed in the United States on 22 October 2019 Verified Purchase Time-line issues on how Stephanie becomes someone new. Her self-created descent into sexual Hell, then into a trained agent seems way too short. 23 at her prime and passing for early 30s?. Her self doubt issues as the story develops and trying to keep “legends” straight seems more true to life than movie plots. WILL read the next book in the series, though. 4 people found this helpful Finished this just in time for the movie! Reviewed in the United States on 30 January 2020 Verified Purchase Occasionally I’ll read a book because a movie was based on it—Walter Tevis’s The Hustler, Donn Pearce’s Cool Hand Luke, and this book. It allows me to get away from my usual reading genres and better appreciate the films. The film based on this book was one that I have been waiting for and represents a recent trend—movies starring women who are violent, courageous, tricky, persistent, and struggling with a past. Nicole Kidman’s 2018 Destroyer powerfully illustrates these films. This book provided a compelling story of a woman whose life has been torn by tragedy, who has fallen into an abyss, and who re-emerges as a lethal, intelligent, and icy avenger. 3 people found this helpful A five star read you should not miss! Highly Recommended. Reviewed in the United States on 25 February 2020 Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase Mark Burnell’s thriller ‘The Rhythm Section’ was a revisit for me. I had read the book initially back in 1999 when it first came out. It was a great read back then, in context with the times we lived. Everything changed two years later, though, with 9/11. Even then, the storyline was seen as prophetic, the author being asked how he could possibly know about the WTC terrorist attack almost two years beforehand. Recently I learnt a movie based on the book was due out shortly. This piqued my curiosity. To ‘appeal’ to today’s audiences, they would surely have to modify, read ‘update’, the premise of the novel. The audience had evolved: some would not understand the context at all, as their frame of reference, dictated by their young age, was the more complex world of today, with intelligence satellites and cameras monitoring everything we do. Others, perhaps, having lived those times as adults, would see the tale as dated, unoriginal even, given the plethora of similar stories in books and movies in the last ten years. I decided to re-read the novel, this time on my Kindle, with as fresh a mind as my quirky memory would allow (I remember almost everything I have ever read), to see if author Burnell’s words still had the resonance I felt back then. The verdict? Yes, they do! This is a tribute to Mark Burnell’s skill in crafting not just an intriguing tale, but populating it with a set of characters and situations which strike a chord in the imagination of the reader. The protagonist, Stephanie Patrick, goes through an evolution, complete with name changes, which is wholly believable and devastating in its plausibility. Despite her circumstances, irrespective of whatever Life decides to throw at her, she’s a fighter. Burnell subtly changes the tone of the distinct incarnations of her personality thus maintaining the believability of her personal transition. She is, easily, the lynchpin of the novel. Creating this character was a laudable feat in itself, yet the author then went on to populate her world with others with which to interact. Some are good; many, the majority, not so. Even these figures, including those we meet briefly, are tangible persons with their personal foibles, history, and agendas, all of which establishes a solid landscape for the tale. Yes, time has marched on and our world has changed considerably, yet Mark Burnell’s ‘The Rhythm Section’ remains a fresh today as it was when first published. A five star read you should not miss! Highly Recommended. Kept me up at night Reviewed in the United States on 7 October 2019 Verified Purchase This was a well written book the story was fast paced and interesting to say the least. I would absolutely recommend this book. Very Well Written, and Authentic Reviewed in the United States on 4 February 2020 Verified Purchase I don't know what the author did, and/or how he researched for this book, but as a fan of over 40 years of this genre, I would say this novel is as close to the bone as you can get. I think this gets you closer to what this shadow world and characters that inhabit it really are, as opposed to well, most everything else out there. You could really feel what it was like to crawl into their skin and experience the thrills and the horrors of doing these kinds of things- and even more, really appreciate having a dull, boring life, with just a hot cup of coffee! There are others nit-picking little things about this book, but the main take-away is this book is so well written, it let's you experience this world in a way that is rarely captured in words. If you want to rip all the glitz and glamor away from this kind of work, and feel what it's really like, read this book. One person found this helpful Gym bag must haves. Forgot how the world without cell phones worked. 2 people found this helpful Held my interest Reviewed in the United States on 9 March 2020 Verified Purchase Interesting plot twist at the end. The story was a bit slow moving but it was engaging enough to finish the book. Curious enough to try the next book in the series. Quite the Page Turner Reviewed in the United States on 11 August 2001 Verified Purchase As the jaded consumer of hundreds of thrillers I'm something of a tough audience, but Mark Burnell's debut novel was a genuine page turner and I was very impressed with it. Yes, the plot bears more than a passing resemblance to "La Femme Nikita" and yes, the book is a little too long and drags a bit in the middle, but Stefanie Patrick is much too interesting a heroine and Burnell much too good a storyteller to let small quibbles get in the way of "a crackling good yarn. " The book is about how a drug-taking prostitute a few steps from her final fix is transformed into the dreaded Petra Reuter, unstoppable international assassin. There is plenty of sex and violence and a plethora of repulsive terrorists - in short, enough to keep the average thriller fan happily engaged for hours. I'm looking forward to Mr. Burnell's next foray with bated breath. 27 people found this helpful Report abuse.

Supported by 202 fans who also own “Sax & Flute” this is the first deep house record i've bought, couldn't resist. some time ago, i started to become more familiar with deep house, kinda as a uptempo equivalent to chillhop related beats. that release right here is a small masterpiece for me. the jazzy loops, the tight kick drums, the leading hi-hats, the psychedelic vibe - it's just perfect. not to forget to emphasize the trumpet on "Midnight In Peckham". phenomenal. i'm more than glad to have found this beautiful piece of art. chillhopper go to album.
